There are two certification types - Grassroots Referee and Recreational Referee. You can learn more about each type on our Grassroots Referee FAQ page and our Recreational Referee FAQ page under the Referees tab.
The Grassroots Referee course is for people 13 years of age and older. You MUST be 13 years of age or older when you go to register for the course. This certification allows a Grassroots Referee to officiate all levels of competition from competitive (D1-D3) through recreational (D4). This certification is good for 1 year and does NOT come with a referee ‘kit.’ Online course code: RecRef08
The Recreational Referee course is is designed for 11-13 year-old kids who are interested in becoming a soccer referee. You MUST be 11 years of age or older when you go to register for the course. This certification only allows a Recreational Referee to do small-sided (9v9 or lower) D4 (recreational) games. This certification is good for 2 years and comes with a referee ‘kit’ (shirt, shorts, and socks). Online course code: RecRef08

The certification, or recertification, is done at the state level and not through WCSA. Any questions, issues, or concerns regarding the (re-)certification process need to be addressed with the state. You can contact the state by emailing them at [email protected]
